The Scarlet Pimpernel

I actually really liked The Scarlet Pimpernel. One thing I hadn’t known, though, is that the Scarlet Pimpernel is the pattern for so many other masked crusaders and men with secret identities, like The Shadow. The model of a dandy using his ineffectuality in his public life to turn away suspicion from his masked heroism is such a great set up. And Leslie Howard plays a delightful fop.

Are there any “pretending to be an airhead” superheroines? I’m curious. I can’t think of any right now but it’s probably just early. At this point, it would just be a waste of time to point out every problem with the treatment of women in every movie I watch, but this one was particularly bad.

Anyway. The foppish stylings of Leslie Howard:

I couldn’t find a good clip where he says “Sink me,” but I’m definitely going to try to work that into some piece of fiction somewhere someday. Look out for it.
