A few thoughts on one of my favorite paintings at the Walters in Baltimore. First of all, the word “masquerade” should really not take a writer three attempts to spell. Second of all, I really like this painting on its own merits, but it reminds me of a short story I have yet to actually remember the title or author of, in which someone has to be in a duel and doesn’t want to be in a duel and it might be winter at the time. Helpfully, that’s about all I remember. Third of all, I feel pretty basic now that I know this is everyone’s favorite painting at the Walters, at least everyone in the early 1900’s. But I still like it. Classic is classic.
Go see it. It’s nice there and I like it.
